Choose Your Lighting Carefully

The 250 Watt high pressure sodium lamp is a very effective lamp that can have many practical applications. You need to take the time to determine what you’re using the light for and that you’re getting the right amount of power for your illumination needs. Most commonly, high pressure sodium is used for grow fixtures or for street fixtures, but can have many other useful applications. They are much smaller than traditional fluorescent tubes, and belong to the high intensity discharge (HID) family of lamps. They will have a dark pink glow at first, and then brighten to a red/orange/pink glow once they are warm. In between the changes, some lights might glow blue or white for a minute, but they are expressly known for their red spectrum color.

Using a 250 Watt high pressure sodium light bulb is going to give you a lot of electricity in a smaller package, allowing you to get more power for less energy consumption. They are very efficient, which is why they are used so widely for outdoors, security fixtures, and even grow fixtures. They produce a lot of lumens per watt, making them perfect for dark conditions or things in need of a lot of light without a lot of power. Generally, you’ll get an average of 20,000 to 30,000 lumens out of a 250W high pressure sodium light bulb, which is quite a lot in the grand scheme of lighting fixtures.

Even though they are great illumination source, they are under a lot of pressure (hence the name) and have many chemical reactions going on inside the tube. As such, the tube is made of alumina, or translucent aluminum oxide, which can withstand the pressure and hold up to all of the chemical changes of the gases inside the tube. The 250W high pressure sodium light bulb is started with Xenon, which is the noble gas with the lowest thermal conductivity and ionization potential, which means that it won’t interfere with the other events going on within the bulb. Plus, since it has a low conductivity, the lamp can be started much easier than it might be otherwise. Once it heats up, the sodium expands and gets excited, then mixes with the mercury to create the infamous red spectrum of light that high pressure sodium lights are known for.

When you want a lot of illumination for a little investment, the 250W HPS lamp is a great choice. It doesn’t matter if you’re using the it for indoor gardening, or if you just want to make the most of your streetlights or security fixtures. There is a use for just about everyone when it comes to HPS lamps, and you can count on them to provide a lot of illumination without costing a lot of money or using a lot of energy. These bulbs are more fragile than others because of all of the chemical reactions going on inside of them, but they are made to be stronger and more durable, which still makes them a safe choice for a variety of illuminating needs.

Want to do it yourself? We make it easy to make your own 1000W HPS growing Light.Even if you have never built a hydroponic HPS grow light before you can now easily make yourself one and save hundreds of dollars.

You will need the following for a successful do it yourself 1000 HPS Grow Light project:

• 1000W HPS Ballast kit
• 1000W HPS Light Bulb (Choose from above)
• One Mogul Socket (You don't need one if you are buying our reflector)
• One Reflector (Ours comes with a Socket and Power Cord)
• Power Cord (You don't need one if you are buying our reflector)
• Ballast Housing (We do not offer this and is where your handy work comes in) Make sure the unit is grounded and does not have any sharp edges.)
• We always suggest calling a qualified electrician if you do not feel comfortable with electricity.
